Collecting Military Surplus (Milsurp) rifles is a hobby I enjoy enough to share my experiences with others through these videos. This interest blossomed into an interest in handguns and modern firearms as well. I am by no means an expert but have learned so much through RUclips that I just want to be a part of this community and spread the enjoyment of this hobby.

Remington Model 58 O-ring Trials
Here we are trying to find the best remedy for a sick 1956 Remington Sportsman 58 by replacing the worn out fore end washer with a hardware store bought o-ring. We have some replacement washers on the way from an eBay seller but this one-ring option was available first so we are giving it a try. We also replaced the fore end ring with Remingtons upgraded part to help save the washer.
So we tried out the o-ring with 4 rounds of trap on a 90 degree day where I was on the line alone so we got the gun nice and hot. I wasn’t really worried about the o-ring sealing, I was more worried about it melting from the heat so these conditions were perfect for this test.

Welcome! This is a follow up to the video below where we take an in depth look at the gas system of the 1956 Remington Sportsman 58 and see how we can do some routine maintenance to increase its reliability and ability to maintain a gas seal at the barrel ring. This is a weak point in this design that can hopefully be remedied here and now......LETS GO!!!! Guys and Gals.....if you belong to any...
Remington Sportsman 58
Просмотров 355День назад
In 1956 Remington introduced the Model 58 shotgun affectionately known as the Sportsman 58, the first gas operated semi automatic shotgun that they ever made. A predecessor to the mighty 1100, the Sportsman 58, although flawed, set the stage for the success of the 1100 and brought Remington into the "modern" era of shotgun manufacturing. By 1963 the Model 58 was gone as the dominance in the mar...

-Wagon Wheel Chemistry? In 1865, German chemist Friedrich August Kekulé claimed to have discovered the ring structure of benzene after dreaming of a snake eating its own tail. In 1963 Remington introduced the Model 1100 shotgun, a gas operated semi automatic that took the shotgun world by storm.......so much so that it caused Remington to discontinue the Model 11-48 and Model 58, the two other semi auto shotguns in the lineup. You can imagine how it impacted sales of the competitors offerings. The example I have here is a 1985 production, 2 3/4'' 12 Gauge with a 30''...

CHECK COMMENTS FOR AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM MILSURP GARAGE Here we have the Heckler and Koch HK45C produced in New Hampshire in 2018. It is a DA/SA compact semi auto chambered in .45 ACP. In 2006 it was poised to replace the Beretta M9 as the US military sidearm but that program was abandoned and it became a commercially marketed redesign of the HK USP. Here we touch on some history, design de...

It's a tube magazine fed bolt action .22 rimfire chambered deluxe model complete with aperture sight, sling swivels, and select walnut stock. The Marlin Model 81 was made in three different versions from 1939 to 1971 with slight variations in versions as new patent designs came along with new Marlin innovations. This particula...

Here we have a Browning Auto 5 in 16 gauge, a 1957 production Belgian made beauty with a 26'' barrel, 2 3/4'' chamber, and Improved Cylinder choke. Looking forward for the next video.👍🇺🇸😎🙏🏽✌🏻
You and me both!
Milsurp Garage , I’m watching what’s going on with this firearm repair .👍🙏🏽🇺🇸😎✌🏻
Use a brass screwdriver or make one. Brass will not scratch steel.😅 I know this is 2 years old, but my son took that bolt off. The Screw. For the cylinder? and he said it . Screw just jumped out. Like it had a little spring in it So far I haven't seen any Spring. It's a 64. Cobra detective special😅
I would think brass is way too soft to make an effective screwdriver, you just need to be careful not to scratch.
I just picked one up today for 650. It’s a gem with the only blemish being a small crack in the wood. Super happy with my purchase and came here to learn some stuff. Great video!
Appreciate it. The 2000 is always an attention getter at the trap range. Enjoy!
How do the O-rings compare to those on the Rem. 1100? Some consider them the Achille's heel of the 1100, but I have not found them to be fragile or short-lived - although I do not shoot as often as you do.
They last an amazingly long time and if you use a quality part are not at all fragile. I remember first seeing this design years ago and thinking to myself that it will be annoying to have to replace that thin o-ring all the time......and in actuality they last forever.
I hung in there with you all the way. Thank you once again for your time and effort to bring these designs to us.👍👍👍🙏🏽🇺🇸😎✌🏻
Thank YOU for tuning in! I’m really enjoying the follow ups I’m doing on making this gas system bulletproof. I have a feeling you will find those installments interesting.
@@MilsurpGarage you bet I will👍
will it handle steel shot?
I don’t have enough experience with steel shot to be 100% sure but I would imagine so.
😮😀👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Oooooh Yea You Adapted Overcame and Won 😀
Success! First off you survived the experiment. Congratulations. Always the first goal. It looked like it was safe enough and would work, the only question is for how long before wear begins to show. So far so good. It's gotta feel good to improvise a repair like this while you wait for the other gasket.
I was very happy with the results, yes. The square washers arrived and I'm going to evaluate them as well......stay tuned!
Look at getting some "cannon plug pliers", its like a channel lock but with soft plastic jaws. They are made to take apart milspec circular connectors without damage.
**REALITY CHECK ... have a 4-digit serial # Winchester model 100 in immaculate condition ... these aren't range guns you go to the range and fire 100s of shots off at targets on the weekend like a modern AR ... these are hunting guns ... a few shots for sight in and 1 or 2 shots to kill your annual deer ... THAT'S IT ... clean & inspect thoroughly ... put back in the safe and repeat next year ... the 100s I have shot have shown "hunting accuracy" ... that's 2-3 MOA ... if you have a model 100 rifle/ammo combo that will shoot sub 2 MOA you have an exceptionally good one
Well said. That is an aspect I may not always address as I do not hunt, they are all 100 rounders to me! Did a range video a few months ago where this one went along. Day was really weird so I never posted the video. Might look it up again to see if I can salvage it somehow. Also shot the FN49 that day I remember. The Winchester Model 100 shot flawlessly and accurately through about 50 rounds.
Fascinating. That ring sure looks like it will perform properly. I could almost feel it myself when you said you could feel it smoosh as you tightened the cap. I can't wait to hear how it goes.
Nice video, nice rifle. I've got a solid frame #4, unfortunately the bore wasn't that GREAT but if you know when they were made you wouldn't be too surprised. It looked like it was shot A LOT and NEVER OR HARDLY EVER CLEANED, barrel was leaded up pretty BAD!! I worked on it for awhile and got most of it out. I've also got recently a Ideal model 44 in 22lr!! It's in pretty good condition and it's like a Stevens 1915 FAVORITE on SEROIDS, it's got a heavy full length octagon barrel so it's quite heavy. They are FUN to shoot. I only shoot CB shorts, Aguila SUPER Colibri and CCI QUIETS through the #4 and shoot any 22lrs except Stingers and other long cased 22lrs because it wasn't ment to shoot that ammo because that ammo came out around 100 years or so after that rifle was made. Not worried that the rifle couldn't handle the power. I just don't want to hurt the CHAMBER because of the extra length which could hurt ACCURACY shooting the correct length ammo.
This was James Bond's first pistol in the novels by Ian Fleming.

@@MilsurpGarage OOPS! Gotta start reading those...😯
@@dangerman007 every time I type one of those out I wonder if anybody ever reads it.
This will be an interesting series. I think your o ring will work just fine. If not, maybe one with a lil thicker cross section. Grand River Rubber makes square section rings; maybe worth checking out.
You will find out tomorrow, stay tuned! Square washers arrived today as well. Just in time for RANGE day tomorrow.
@@MilsurpGarage SHWEET!
I believe your barrel is not original to the receiver. The rear sight and the Union Metallic Cartridge marking are not present on my complete original number 4. Also, your Butt plate you customized appeared to have the UMC circumscribed logo. Also, your takedown lever does not fully rotate to the stop pin indicating that the fit to the lower barrel notch is tight. This is actually a great situation for long term wear. Your fit and finish are next level great. You and whoever had that rifle must really appreciate it. I want mine to be a nice as yours. Great work.
It took me three sittings to get through this one but just because of my hectic schedule. Always interesting and educational but this one was especially good.
Thanks for taking the time, appreciate it. If that wasn't enough there is a follow up video! Going to follow up with the options to bulletproof this shotguns gas retention system with a series of follow ups. Thanks for tuning in!

Tell that to B. A. Baracus.....I dare you.
@MilsurpGarage it wasn't a issued gun its used bye Bermuda military It's mostly sercurity and police fbi etc
You can shoot. MIlitary ammo in a commercial gun but shooting commercial in Military gun is chancy over pressure
Don't you have that backwards?
@MilsurpGarage commercial is more powerful with weaker walls I no it sounds back wards it use to drive me nuts those thinner walls hold more powder But can rupture !
@MilsurpGarage your right I'm. Wrong sorry guys less space but thicker walls more pressure it's best too shoot what the barrel says

I bought one of these at a pawn shop many years ago for $75. The cylinder stop was broken. I called Colt to buy the part and they wouldn’t sell it to me. They suggested I send it in for repair. I didn’t really need it at the time so I sent it to them. Three weeks later I got a package containing a repaired pistol, no charge. The note in the package said there was a recall on the cylinder stop so they repaired it no charge. My Detective Special spends most of its time in my gun safe but I still love shooting it from time to time
Most common thing to fail on Remington autos. I keep a bag of o-rings around for my model 1100s.
THE BEST AUTOLOADING SHOTGUN EVER MADE PERIOD!

I've got an 580-series where the bullets from all magazines (inclusive original Ruger 5 & 30 rounds) feed too low. All bullets which rest on the righthand side of the magasine crash into the edges of the chamber while chambering. This seriously dents the tips of the bullets or making them bounce upwards, leading to a stove-pipe out of battery situation. It's as if the magazine rests too far down from the chamber. On all magazines I've had to put a BIG upward bend the metal lip that holds the right-hand side bullets. It has fixed many failure to feed, but theres still a lot. Returning it to Ruger isn't really viable as I Live in Europe. :/
You probably already know about "Art's Gunshop" in Misouri. He is the go to guy for anything pertaining to Browning A-5s. He has some great videos on repairing and restoring them.
Mine fires the first shot perfectly Then the case either doesnt eject or the second round gets stuck and misfires Any ideas please guys I love that gun qs i believe its one of less than 5 in Zimbabwe. Inherited from orh dad who passed away 2022 and he was 72. Unusually for an African he had quite a knowledge for firearms unlike many jis generation
First step is to try some different types of ammo. I’ll bet you’ll find one that will cycle just fine.
@peterfraser9070 - Neither Weitzman nor Boone were ever cross-examined or questioned by an adversarial attorney or reporter. - Neither Weitzman nor Boone were given the opportunity to examine the Carcano and answer questions under oath to describe in detail both their mystical processes in identifying the Mauser, and then determining if it was indeed the rifle that Boone found, all closely observed, and deliberated upon with Fritz, Day, Craig, and whatever other officers were involved in the discussion. - Constable Weitzman a graduated engineer and the senior officer of the two, was never questioned by the commissioners!!! - These highly curious shortfalls don't happen in a professional investigation. They only happen in the Warren Commission accessories-after-the-fact world of magic bullets, shape-shifting rifles, bi-locational wallets, and repeated, mathematically impossible, witness death "coincidences." @peterfraser9070 again, you and your deep state propaganda colleagues are laughable frauds.

This mod 58 is very much like the winchester mod 1400. just a different bolt lock up.

Another awesome video! The Remington trigger group is also similar to the 552 Speedmaster. 2 push pins securing the trigger group. Love watching your videos drop!🇺🇸👍✌️
Great shape for its age.
Excellent! I'm happy you found one you like. Great vid.
I wonder why no one ever came up with a spring assisted pump shotgun? The Winchester 1300 almost seems to unlock on its own after a shell is fired so why not have a slight spring assist in slamming it closed? I know. Crazy daydreaming and an idle mind is the devils workshop! 😂!!! Edit: there's nothing like having the field to yourself!👍👍
Another good one. I do like gas operated shotguns, my model 11 is kinda unpleasant to shoot with my stout buckshot
oh man thats a beauty!
The Double-Lone-Nutters lose on the crux of Oswald's alleged guilt: the Carcano was planted. There is no way that at least(!) 5 professional police officers would identify a rifle as a Mauser 7.65 when "MADE ITALY cal. 6.5" is stamped CLEARLY ON THE TOP OF THE BOLT RECEIVER. The Carcano would NEVER be allowed into evidence in a capital murder trial. The judge would roll his eyes just as Walter Cronkite did when the Mauser shape-shifted into the Carcano, 24 hours later. No shape-shifting rifle, no shape-shifting magic bullet(s)

I just made a complete m1951 that i built frame slide and everything. I copper plated it then nickel plated over the copper and carved the grips out of walnut with mother of pearl enlay.
Sure wish I could see a few photos of that! You should post a link to a RUclips video of it!
What barrel you use more?🎉
I would say I use both about them same but there really isn’t much difference in the feel between them. I rarely take both barrels to the range but bring it with one or the other attached....maybe that’s why. The longer barrel is definitely better for me as far as accuracy goes probably due to the increased sight radius.
Heck thanks for showing me that I need both parts on that bolt I need the claw and that spring thing. I probably won't even be able to find it will I I think I got ripped off on this thing
Have no fear, the extractor barely works even when installed! For $75 you hardly got ripped off….. Try Numrich for the extractor. Might have to search and cross reference a bit. They are pretty knowledgeable, give them a call.
Just checked. Numrich might have it. Check under Kessler. They have both left and right. They have the screw too.
Also somebody saw the choke off of it I was wondering if I could put another one in? I don't even know I picked this thing up for 75 bucks and I don't think I got my money's worth...
If someone cut the barrel end off it is a cylinder choke now......
I need the extraction claw for one of those, any tips of where I might find one? I have the exact same shotgun
I posted to your other comment but in case you’re looking here.....try Numrich and look under Kessler for the R and L side and the screw. They have it all. Hopefully that fits.
I've only shot a box of ammo. Sometimes when i press the mag release it stays stuck on the right side. Maga won't dear until i push it back in on the right side
Who is the manufacturer of that particular 1911?
Ruger SR1911
@@woodstream6137 Hmmmmm. Looks like it needs to be smoothed out.
@@MilsurpGarage figures, i can't repeat it with loaded or unloaded magazines. Putting a mag in definitely snags a bit at the release button but the button is behaving now.
I saw a revelation model with box magazine at a pawn shop today. Said western auto. Did Mossberg or Marlin make that . ?
I think it depends on the model number. Check here. www.gunlearn.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Revelation.pdf
The known issue with the older Model 19s was the Forcing Cone. This is why many departments told officers to train with 38s and reserve the 357 for duty. Lots of older ones have cracks about the cone yet function fine. Just don’t feed a heavy diet of full load 357.
There is an interesting article online about the “lack of broken forcing cone examples on the market” theory. Opinion is that there are not enough cracked cone guns out there to equate to the supposed frequency of breakage. S&W does not repair these examples for years so you would expect a large amount of cracked guns laying around but internet outreach on forums and such has shown not many of these examples exist leading some to believe it was not as prolific a problem as generally discussed. Case in point, I have an N frame Highway Patrolman and my 1963 Model 19 and I use .357 rounds in them both exclusively (as well as my Python) as I have other revolvers for .38 shooting. Not sure what I said in this video years ago, might have been thinking it was weak back then, but I have steadily been using .357 through it and hardly believe it’s a big problem anymore. If it cracks.....I have a great example for a video! Thanks for tuning in.
